Some perspective on #CecilTheLion.

The insane outrage over an American dentist and trophy hunter killing Cecil the Lion has gotten completely out of hand, and people need to back off and get some perspective.

Where was this outrage before, over things that actually matter in a country like Zimbabwe? Seriously, where?

Where is the outrage over Zimbabwe’s 80% unemployment rate? Seriously, 80% according to the CIA World Factbook. The country is overwhelmingly rural, and the vast majority of the population survive by subsistence farming. They are some of the poorest people in the world. The average Zimbabwean is too concerned about feeding his family to spare much worry over a dead lion.

Zimbabwe has a 15% AIDS infection rate, and one of the highest AIDS mortality rates in the world. Where is the outrage over that?

Zimbabwe has one of the shortest life-expectancy rates on Earth. Where is the outrage over that?

Zimbabwe has one of the highest infant mortality rates on Earth. Where is the outrage over that?

Zimbabwe has one of the highest rates of infectious disease in the world. Where is the outrage over that?

Zimbabwe’s natural resources are being extracted by transnational corporations which use all kinds of legal maneuvers to make sure that practically no wealth stays in the country, except in the hands of a very tiny elite, like President Robert Mugabe and his friends. Which is hidden in offshore accounts. Where is the outrage over that?

Zimbabwe’s President, Robert Mugabe, has been in power since 1980. He has been called, among other things, “the most brutal dictator since Idi Amin.” Mugabe established a one-party state using a North Korean trained security force. If you listen to the sayings of his supporters it sounds a lot like what comes out of the mouths of North Koreans about the Dear Leader. Mugabe and his supporters conducted ethnic cleansing against rival tribes in which at least 20,000 people were killed and buried in mass graves. Mugabe and his supporters have conducted a campaign of ethnic cleansing against white land owners. Mugabe and his cohorts have stolen national assets, enriched themselves, and beggared the nation. Where is your outrage over that?

Oh, and the wildlife? Mugabe’s supporters threw a birthday party for him back in May. Mugabe’s birthday parties don’t cost mere thousands, not even mere hundreds of thousands but millions. Think about that. In one of the poorest countries in the world Robert Mugabe and his supporters are willing to spend more on one course of dinner than most Zimbabweans will make in their entire lives. More on one party than most Americans will make in their entire lives. Among the menu items at this past May’s birthday party were a host of African wildlife, much of it covered by CITES, capped off with a baby elephant, which I gather is one of Mugabe's favorite dishes. Where was your outrage over that?

Among the birthday presents were one large crocodile, shot and mounted, and (get this!) one very old, very large male lion, shot and mounted.

Let me repeat that for emphasis: ONE VERY OLD, VERY LARGE MALE LION, SHOT AND MOUNTED.

Where was your outrage over that? Or does it only matter if it’s done by a moderately wealthy American dentist, but not if it is done by the obscenely wealthy supporter of an even more obscenely wealthy African dictator? Does it only matter when the lion is named “Cecil”?

Yes, Walter Palmer broke the law when he hired an unlicensed professional hunter and guide for his lion hunt, and yes he should face legal action for that.  But the upwelling of anger, outrage, internet excoriation, and even death threats has reached an insane level, and people need to back off, dial back the anger, and get some perspective.

Zimbabwe has much, much larger, more important issues to deal with than one dead lion. So you’ll excuse me if I don’t join you in raising your dudgeon.

  • Alan Petrillo Just a note, but if you really like I can add my research in the notes.

  • John Robarts ANOTHER example of FOURTH GENERATION WARFARE to miss direct us from the murder for profit schemes at planned parenthood and the Sarah Bland death by cop etc etc

  • John Robarts Go ahead and laugh ....the reality will hit you like a drop hammer when you finally get it.

  • Jay Ashworth One of the best things you've written.

  • Pamela Jaye Ashworth Sorry about that. people write notes so rarely that they are hard to notice on the Facebook App.

  • Pamela Jaye Ashworth Although it says up there that it's a note. Oops

  • Pamela Jaye Ashworth But getting outraged over serving children is just nowhere near as much fun!

  • Pamela Jaye Ashworth That was starving children -thank you google voice recognition

  • Jay Ashworth In fact, the reason is different than that. The reason is because if the problem is starving children, one is forced to confront the fact that that is a problem one could do something about personally. It isn't possible for me personally to stop rich people from trophy hunting. So I can become righteously indignant about it without the danger of having to back it up with action.
